How to make an exam study plan that fits your week

Start with the time you really have. Then give new material and returning reviews room in the same plan.

A useful exam plan answers two questions each study day: what is due for review? and how much new material can I add? A calendar that only divides the syllabus into equal chunks misses the first question. A flashcard queue without an exam date misses the second.

Begin with constraints, not a perfect timetable

Before assigning topics to days, write down the things your plan cannot ignore. You can do this on paper or in Cognito’s Exam Plan.

Exam date
The deadline. Check the current date and syllabus with the exam provider.
Study days
The weekdays you can actually study, including any days you need to leave free.
Daily capacity
A sustainable amount of work for each available day, not your best-ever session.
Card inventory
What is already in your library and what still needs to become practice material.
Review schedule
Cards already due or expected to return through spaced repetition.

Keep a little flexibility near the exam for consolidation rather than scheduling new material until the final day. Cognito lets you add an optional consolidation period.

Make room for reviews before adding new cards

Begin each session with due reviews. Use the remaining time to introduce new cards from a topic or your own notes. Check each generated question and answer before saving it; an inaccurate card becomes a repeated error.

An illustrative five-day rhythm

Each study day has the same order. The amount of work changes with your actual due queue and capacity.

MondayReview → new
TuesdayReview → new
WednesdayReview → new
ThursdayReview → new
FridayReview → new

Illustration only: this is a routine, not a prediction of how many cards any learner should complete. Your exam, available time and current reviews determine the daily target.

New material creates future reviews. If the due queue grows, reduce the amount you introduce rather than hiding unfinished reviews behind a fixed “new cards per day” target.

Adjust the plan when real life intervenes

If you miss a day

Carry unfinished work forward and look at the remaining study days. Do not pretend that every missed review happened on time.

If the daily target becomes too large

Change something real: add study capacity where possible, narrow the material you are covering, or revise the date if it is flexible. A harder-looking calendar alone cannot create more time.

If your exam is very close

Prioritise due reviews and weak topics over generating a large new library. Verify high-stakes facts against your current syllabus and authoritative materials.

How Cognito turns this into an Exam Plan

Choose your exam in Settings, then open Exam Plan on Home. Set the exam date, study weekdays, daily capacity and, if you want one, a consolidation period. Cognito combines those choices with your card inventory and current FSRS review schedule to show today’s review and new-card target.

As you study, the plan updates. If you miss a day, unfinished work is carried forward without changing your cards’ FSRS schedule. When the remaining capacity is unrealistic, the plan flags overload so you can adjust the date or capacity.

Exam Plans and FSRS review are available in the free tier. You can make cards by hand without a generation limit; the free AI allowance is 10 generation batches per calendar month from topics, pasted text or photos. Premium adds unlimited AI generation and more supported source types. Compare what is included.

Cognito is an independent study tool, not an official exam syllabus. AI-generated cards may contain mistakes or omit topics; check them against your exam board’s current requirements.

Make the next study day clear

Bring your own material, review the cards you save, and let your available days shape the plan.
